KTH, the School of Engineering Sciences, the Department of Mechanics announces a position as “Application Expert/Researcher/Postdoc” in Exascale Computing with application to numerical/computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Job Description

The successful candidate will work together with academic researchers and graduate students at the Department of Mechanics in the areas of direct and large-eddy simulation (DNS and LES) of turbulent flows, and colleagues at the KTH computer centre PDC-HPC in the areas of large-scale parallel simulations. The applicant will join the exascale computing team within the EU FP7 project CRESTA – Collaborative Research into Exascale Systemware, Tools and Applications (http://cresta.epcc.ed.ac.uk).

The applicant is expected to take a leading role in our effort regarding the duties and deliverables of KTH with regards to the code nek5000 in the CRESTA project; in particular WP6 (Applications). Nek5000 is a high-order spectral-element code which has proven extreme parallel scalability. Within the CRESTA project, certain aspects of nek5000 are considered and improved, including the setup of benchmark suites and reduced computational kernels, the assessment of hybrid parallelisation concepts and the corresponding adaptation of the discretisation strategy, and the implementation of variable discretisation order in the computational domain.

In addition, together with the co-design activities within CRESTA, other aspects such as code re-design/re-factoring and parallel debugging (WP2), pre- and postprocessing and meshing (WP5) and library usage (WP4) will be considered.

The position has a strong focus on computer science aspects of exascale computing. The consideration of specific physical flow cases is possible, but not necessarily a major part of the position.

Research Environment

The position will be located at the Department of Mechanics, embedded in active research groups organised in the Linné FLOW Centre (www.flow.kth.se) and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre (SeRC, www.e-science.se). Most importantly, close ties to the KTH computer centre PDC-HPC (www.pdc.kth.se) are maintained. PDC-HPC operates state-of-the-art computational and storage resources for a variety of scientific application domains, including mechanics, computational chemistry, life sciences, climatology, and physics. Amongst the computer systems is the currently largest supercomputer in the Nordic countries, Lindgren, a 305 TF Cray XE6 system with over 36,000 cores. The international collaboration within the CRESTA project (http://cresta.epcc.ed.ac.uk/) is an integral part of work duties.

International collaboration will be maintained with the main developer of nek5000 at Argonne National Laboratories (USA), the CRESTA team, but also on a national level within the Swedish eScience Research Center (SeRC – www.e-science.se).

Work Place

KTH (www.kth.se) is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 13,500 full-year undergraduate students, 1,300 postgraduate students and 3,900 employees.

The School of Engineering Sciences carries out a wide range of research at the international front line, from fundamental disciplines such as physics and mathematics, to engineering mechanics with applications such as aeronautics and vehicle engineering. We also offer University degree programs in engineering Physics, Vehicle engineering, Engineering and Education, and “Open Entrance”, as well as a number of International Masters Programmes.

The Linné FLOW Centre (www.flow.kth.se) organizes research in fundamental fluid mechanics at KTH and is one of twenty original centers of excellence set up by the Swedish Research Council (VR). The centre was established with a vision as an outstanding environment for fundamental research in fluid mechanics, where innovative research is born and future research leaders are fostered. It has become one of the internationally-leading research groups in fluid mechanics.

Qualifications

Applicants are preferred to have PhD in either computer science with specialisation in Computational Fluid Dynamics, or fluid dynamics with strong background in computational aspects. Proven experiences in working with application codes (research codes and/or commercial codes) on HPC systems is a prerequisite. Good knowledge of parallel environments (MPI, OpenMP, etc.) and the most important languages (Fortran, C, etc.) is required; knowledge of visualisation packages such as ParaView/VTK/VisIt and experiences with Cray systems are an asset but not required. Solid knowledge of recent numerical methods is also an asset. The present position is formulated as a Postdoc position, but depending on the candidate background and interests, also other options can be considered.

To address its varied work, KTH aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University, especially as concerns its gender structure.

Fluent communication skills in English are required.
