Abstract: Smectic phases of liquid crystals are layered structures which have so
far only been observed in mesogenic systems composed of anisotropic
molecules. In this talk, a molecular-dynamics simulation will be
discussed demonstrating that the Smectic-B crystalline phase can be
formed in a system of particles interacting via a
spherically-symmetric potential. This finding remarkably simplifies
the basic model of smectic phases, thereby advancing our understanding
of the causes underlying the occurrence of these structures in liquid
crystals.
